General management action

Routine control of terrestrial and aquatic weeds, including via management agreements with NRM agencies, councils and other organisations.

Routine control of feral animals, including via management agreements with NRM agencies, councils and other organisations.

Targeted revegetation works to increase native vegetation cover over the long term, focussing efforts adjacent to existing remnant vegetation, within threatened ecological communities, within identified regional corridors, and adjacent to rivers, streams and wetlands.

Prevent livestock from having permanent access to rivers, streams and wetlands, and where possible excluding grazing altogether to allow the condition of river banks and wetlands to recover.

Priority management actions for this region

  • Design fences that facilitate passage of large native animals (e.g. kangaroos, emus) across the landscape.
  • Minimise the use of insecticides and pesticides, particularly close to riparian areas, and avoid application on windy days. Chemicals could have a negative effect on native species such as Little Pied Bat, Northern Freetail Bat, Gull-billed Tern, Darling River Snail and Yellow-belly.
  • Retain any hollow-bearing trees (including dead standing trees) such as River Red Gum and Poplar Box as ongoing habitat and refuge for species such as Squirrel Glider, Yellow-bellied Sheathtail Bat, Barking Owl, Glossy Black Cockatoo, Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, Superb Parrot, Turquoise Parrot, Pale-headed Snake and Lace Monitor.
  • Do not remove termite mounds as these are important for native animals such as Short-beaked Echidna and Sand Goanna.
  • Reduce grazing pressure from domestic livestock, particularly in times of drought, to reduce impacts on native plants such as Belson’s Panic, Brigalow, Old Man Saltbush, Slender Darling Pea and Spiny Peppergrass.
  • Ensure that rodent, rabbit and wild dog baits are applied in accordance with label specifications and best practice, as secondary poisoning of species such as Australian Bustard, Black Falcon, Peregrine Falcon, Laughing Kookaburra, Spotted Harrier and Wedge-tailed Eagle may occur on ingestion of poisoned animals.
  • Retain large isolated paddock trees and clumps of trees to assist movement of species such as Common Brushtail Possum, Koala, Diamond Firetail, Hooded Robin, Little Lorikeet, Painted Honeyeater, Varied Sittella, Willie Wagtail and Zebra Finch, and encourage regeneration around them.
  • Retain and/or augment in-stream woody habitat (large logs), as these provide important habitat for aquatic species such as Australian Pelican, Royal Spoonbill, Olive Perchlet, Murray Cod, Silver Perch, Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeon, Yellow-belly and Common Yabby.
  • Protect and restore wetlands to provide secure habitat for aquatic bird species such as Black-fronted Dotterell, Black- necked Stork, Freckled Duck Latham’s Snipe and Little Curlew.
  • Work with the community to control carp as this exotic fish will impact native species such as Darling River Snail, Olive Perchlet, Murray Cod, Silver Perch, Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeon and Yellow-belly.
  • Work with the community to control aquatic weeds as these will impact native species such as Black Swan, Common Greenshank, Glossy Ibis, Olive Perchlet and Southern Purple Spotted Gudgeon.
  • Work with the community to control feral cats which prey on native species such as Little Pied Bat, Stripe-faced Dunnart, Flock Bronzewing, Bush Stone-curlew, Turquoise Parrot, Willie Wagtail, Border Thick-tailed Gecko, Eastern Blue-tongue Lizard and Sand Goanna.
  • Work with the community to control Noisy Miners which out-compete other native bird species such as Brown Treecreeper, Grey-crowned Babbler, Little Lorikeet, Black-chinned Honeyeater, Painted Honeyeater, Speckled Warbler and Turquoise Parrot.
